WHO-supported Program Empowers Teacher to Train Healthier Students

Tshering Dema is a teacher and a single mother. She has also been a trained aerobics instructor ever since she attended a WHO-supported aerobics trainers program. Initiating the aerobic program at her school proved to be incredibly rewarding for Tshering Dema, a dedicated teacher.

She was particularly thrilled to witness her students, especially those who were overweight, embracing the program and becoming healthier. The excitement grew as more students and teachers started participating in the program as well.

Following the positive response and impact, Dema decided to launch the program commercially, which provided her with financial support as a single mother. The most rewarding aspect for her was witnessing the numerous benefits her clients experienced from the program, particularly those who had hypertension or were pre-diabetic. The positive feedback she received motivated her to continue expanding the program.

Then she received a scholarship to continue her education at the Samtse College for Education. Dema did not let this stop her aerobics program. Instead, she successfully convinced the president and management team to support the initiative, ultimately training over 300 teachers. Observing these teachers bring the skills back to their own schools and share the advantages of aerobic exercise proved to be truly fulfilling for her.

Upon returning from her studies, Dema was assigned to Dashiding School in Punakha, where she suggested starting an aerobic session. The management team and principal supported the initiative, leading to the formation of an aerobic club in which the entire school participated three times a week. Teachers also attended and benefited from the program.

Eventually, the program was extended to other schools and monastic bodies to promote a healthy lifestyle. The plan involved training teachers to implement the same program in their own schools. A session at Ugyen Academy garnered enthusiasm from both teachers and students.

Dema continued to introduce the program to other schools and communities, always amazed by the receptiveness of individuals to the idea of adopting a healthier lifestyle. She firmly believes that health is wealth and takes pride in her own physical fitness and wellbeing.

Dema expresses her immense gratitude for the opportunity provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) to continue the program and extends her thanks to everyone involved for their support. In celebration of WHO's 75th anniversary, she commends them for their incredible work in promoting health and wellbeing across the globe.
