Global equitable access to a COVID-19 vaccine, particularly for health workers and other most-at-risk populations, is the only way to mitigate a pandemic's public health and economic impact. As of June 2023, more than 13 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered globally.
Recognizing the urgency of turning vaccine doses into vaccinated, protected communities, WHO, UNICEF and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance launched the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership (CoVDP) in December 2021. The Delivery Partnership (which transitioned in June 2023) was built on existing resources to support the AMC 92 and focuses on the 34 countries with or below 10% coverage in January 2022. Working closely with countries to understand bottlenecks to vaccination, the Delivery Partnership offered access to urgent operational funding, technical assistance and political engagement to rapidly scale up vaccination and monitor progress towards targets.
The Delivery Partnership also built on the substantial body of work realized by the Country Readiness and Delivery (CRD) workstream that was part of COVAX since early 2020, and which made available global guidance and coordinated technical support for the implementation of COVID-19 vaccines.
